What can Homoeopathy do for you?
What is Homoeopathy?
Your body is incredibly complex and has an innate ability or in built mechanism to be healthy and well. Signs and symptoms of ill health simply let you know that that your body is struggling to maintain that state of health or balance called homoeostasis.
Homoeopathy is a holistic therapy that prescribes for you on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level. It has the effect of stimulating your ‘vital force’ or energy by strengthening and nourishing it and the immune system. It works with your body to achieve and improve health.
Homoeopaths are primary health care practitioners who are trained in both medical sciences and the principle and practice of homoeopathy.
History of Homoeopathy
A German Physician, Dr Samuel Hahnemann developed Homoeopathy in the late 18th Century. He found many of his patients were not achieving health and were unhappy with the medicines prescribed due to unwanted side effects. He then sought a more natural approach to health.
From the writings of Hippocrates in 400BC, Hahnemann rediscovered the basic principles of Homoeopathy. “Similia Similibus Curentur” translated means ‘Let Likes be cured by Likes’ Better known as The Law of Similars, what a substance can cause, it can cure. Hahnemann tested medicinal substances on healthy people and found that each substance produced a specific set of symptoms. When the same preparation was administered in extremely small amounts to a sick person with a similar set of symptoms, the illness would be cured. For example, drinking coffee in large amounts can cause insomnia. A homoeopathic medicine for this insomnia would contain a minute amount of coffee.
The name Homoeopathy is derived from ancient Greece, homoios meaning like and pathos suffering hence ‘like suffering’.
How are they made?
Homoeopathic medicines are made predominantly from plants and minerals. They are made in homoeopathic pharmacies by a special dilution process so the medicine is low in concentration but high in energy. One part of a natural substance (the mother tincture) is diluted in many parts of water and alcohol. This mixture is shaken vigorously before being diluted again. This two step process is repeated over and over again.
The name given to the process of repeatedly diluting and succussing (shaking) a substance this way is called potentisation. It changes the physical make up of the water molecule releasing the energy inside the substance.
The significance of homoeopathy
The incidence of major chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease has continued to climb despite massive expenditure on medical research. There has been a failing to achieve significant improvement in society’s general level of health. As a result more and more health professionals and lay people alike are searching for alternatives.
Homoeopathy is a time tested systematic medical science, which meets the needs for a more economical and non-toxic therapy. It offers you and society improved health, increased productivity and quality of life. Homoeopathy is preventative and curative in its approach. In emergencies or treatment of chronic disease, Homoeopathy will work with you and offer a more complete form of healing that comes from deep within your body’s own resources.
